Likes and Dislikes

It is very likely that you'll have to say what food and drink you like or dislike in your speaking exam. So, make sure you can say these things really confidently. We will revise how to say you like or dislike something and we will also look at the verbs (doing words) involved.

Essen = to eat Trinken = to drink
Ich esse = I eat Ich trinke = I drink
Er isst = he eats Er trinkt = he drinks
Sie isst = she eats Sie trinkt = she drinks
Manfred isst = Manfred eats Manfred trinkt = Manfred drinks
Sie essen = they eat Sie trinken = they drink
Manfred und Anna essen = Manfred and Anna eat Manfred und Anna trinken = Manfred and Anna drink

As you can see, the parts of the verb change, depending on who is doing the eating and drinking.

An important thing to remember is that if you are using a name, you use the same part of the verb as he or she. If there are two names, you use the same part of the verb as saying "they".

Secondly, remember that ich esse = I eat or I am eating. One way of saying it in German, but two ways in English!

If you like doing something, you say gern after the verb.

For Example:

Ich esse gern Pommes = I like eating chips.

Susanne isst gern Brot = Susanne likes eating bread.

If you don't like doing something, you say nicht gern after the verb.

For Example:

Ich trinke nicht gern Orangensaft = I don't like drinking orange juice.

Susanne und Karl trinken nicht gern Mineralwasser = Susanne and Karl don't like drinking mineral water.

Complete the sentences below by typing the correct part of essen or trinken in the first gap and type in the word for the picture of the food in the second gap.
