You may have to talk about what foods and drinks you like and dislike during your Speaking exam.

Here are some examples of the types of questions you may be asked, together with some ideas for the answers:

Question: Answer:
1. Qu'est-ce que tu aimes manger? J'aime le poulet et frites - c'est délicieux.
2. Qu'est-ce que tu n'aimes pas manger ? Je n'aime pas du tout le chou-fleur.
3. Qu'est-ce que tu aimes boire? J'aime boire le café et le lait. Le lait est bon pour la santé mais trop de café est mal pour la santé.
4. Qu'est-ce que tu n'aimes pas boire? Je n'aime pas boire le thé.
5. Qu'est-ce que tu as mangé ce matin au petit déjeuner? Ce matin, j'ai mangé du pain grillé avec du beurre et de la confiture et j'ai bu un grand café.
6. Qu'est-ce que tu mangeras ce soir au dîner? Je mangerai du poulet et des frites.
7. Qu'est-ce que tu manges au collège? Je n'aime pas la cantine au collège. Je préfére apporter des sandwiches.

Role-plays

You may be asked to buy snacks or order food from a café or restaurant in a role-play.

Here are some ideas of the sorts of phrases you need to know. There are a few basic structures here and the rest is vocabulary, so make sure you know it really well. Then you'll have no problems on the day!

Say you would like to reserve a table. Je voudrais réserver une table.
Say you have reserved a table. J'ai réservé une table.
Ask the waiter for a fork. Je voudrais une fourchette.
Ask for the bill. L'addition s'il vous plaît.
Say, enjoy your meal. Bon appétit.
Find out where the telephone is. Où est le téléphone?
Find out where the toilets are. Où sont les toilettes?
Find out if service is included. Le service est-il compris?
Say you would like some ice-cream for dessert. Je voudrais une glace au dessert.
Say you would like a cup of coffee with cream. Je voudrais un café-crème.
Find out what there is to drink. Qu'est-ce qu'il y a à boire?
Say you would like a glass of orange juice. Je voudrais un jus d'orange.
Ask if there is a table free. Avez-vous une table?
Say you would like a table next to the window. Je voudrais une table à côté de la fentêre.
Say you would like a table for two people. Je voudrais une table pour deux personnes.
Ask for the butter. Je voudrais le beurre s'il te plaît.
Say you would like another glass of water. Encore de l'eau minérale.
Say you've had enough to eat. J'ai assez mange.

You may have to write a letter to a pen friend talking about foods and drinks. There is a lot to say on this topic.

Here are some ideas on what you could include in your letter:

  • First of all remember to start the letter appropriately: cher (m) and chère (f).
  • If you are talking about foods and drinks you like and dislike, remember to give reasons. You will gain extra points if you can give opinions accurately.
  • You could talk about the differences between French and British foods, such as the differences between the breakfasts. Give an opinion. Say which you prefer and why.
  • Talk about the different foods eaten at Christmas and other festivals.
  • Talk about foods you like eating when you eat out.
  • Say whether you eat healthily and how you could improve on your diet.
  • Have you ever tried a slimming diet? What are the advantages and disadvantages of diets?
  • Remember to try and ask your friend some questions that they could then reply to in their next letter to you.
  • Close the letter appropriately.
  • Always check your spelling, genders and word order. Make sure you have answered the question and covered everything you have been asked to do.
