Diction

Diction

Diction is the choice of and use of words in the poem.

Naturally, poets will have their own personal diction. It is likely that the two poems you have to consider have been chosen because of the differences in their diction.

The extent of their similarities and differences between the diction in the two poems is very important.

  • What does this tell you about the different intentions of the poets?
  • How does their use of dialect or particular vocabulary influence your understanding of the social and cultural context?
  • Does one of the poems seem more accessible because of the use of diction?
  • Is the reader necessarily able to access one of the poems more easily because of when the poem was written?
  • If the poets have used very different diction, what do you notice about the different effect?
  • Are there clear advantages and disadvantages for each type of diction?
