Big Picture is a free post-16 resource for teachers and students that explores issues around biology and medicine. Published twice a year, it brings cutting-edge science into the classroom.
Everything you need to take your post-16 biology lessons to the next level, the Big Picture series is a free magazine accompanied by fantastic free online content. Animations, games, video and audio files, plus lesson plans and curriculum links accompany each print issue in the series. Online content also includes videos with researchers, radio plays about health, debates about ethical issues and more.
The latest issue – Big Picture: Food and Diet – looks at biological and medical research findings to investigate different aspects of diet and nutrition. Topics featured include appetite, obesity, taste, allergies, metabolic diseases, epigenetics, food policy and behaviour.
In addition to the full colour magazine, online content for the latest issue includes:
- Four specially commissioned short films, ideal for lessons. Explore a state-of-the-art model stomach and find out how it’s used to investigate human digestion, learn about the art and science of breadmaking, and watch a chef recreate a 17th-century cake recipe from the llcome Library archives.
- Sixteen extra online-only articles, including a feature on appetite and a ‘how science works’ mini-series on different kinds of scientific studies. There are also lesson ideas documents to help teachers make the most use of the ‘Big Picture’ resources.
